Garden retailers back the Green City

UK Garden Centre Association members are joining forces with the Green City initiative to promote the real value of plants and green space. Across Europe the Green City initiative, hand-in-hand with a diverse group of organisations, has been promoting the message that plants and planting bring value from a social, economic and environmental point of view since 2002. Now it’s the turn of UK retailers to get involved. The Green City is being incorporated into the GCA system as an incentive for members to do more to promote the green and social side of the garden business. Members meeting the criteria will be awarded with the use of the Green City logo to enhance their promotions. Currently, this is the only way a garden retailer can officially use the logo, which is being developed and will be launched later this year. A ‘Green City Outstanding Social Leadership Award’ is also under development.

Gillie Westwood, Chief Executive at the GCA said: ‘we are thrilled to work with the Green City initiative. Our partnership is an exciting opportunity to add real value and will benefit our members’ businesses and the industry as a whole.’

PLUS! The Green City is encouraging ALL retailers and horticultural businesses, whether they are GCA members or not, to become involved. The Green City is inviting all interested parties to benefit from the free information and downloads available on the site.

Amanda Long, one of the co-ordinators of the UK initiative said:
‘The businesses of tomorrow will be ‘social leaders’, they will place their green and ‘neighbour-to-neighbour’ credentials at the core of what they do. The Green City provides a valuable springboard to promote green and social leadership within the garden business and help secure its future.’
