Too important to miss - be part of defining the new Sustainable Development agenda...

Make a date in your diary now for October 26 - 27 and book to be at the Assises Europeennes Du Paysage Conference

‘Sustainable development’ was memorably defined in the 1987 Bruntland Report ‘Our Common Future’. This document was the product of a United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development investigation that was itself a multi-national search for a sustainable development path. Attitudes have changed in the intervening twenty-two years – climate change, peak oil, water and food security issues as well as increasing awareness of global equity mean that sustainable development is now a core policy driver.

But trade-offs continue to be made and a debate on the impacts of sustainable development itself is much needed.

For three days this October (26th to 28th) researchers, practitioners and policy makers will come together from all corners of Europe to discuss the impact of sustainable development and climate change itself on landscapes and communities. The symposium will question the new landscape aesthetics generated by sustainable development in relation to the recommendations of the European Landscape Convention.

There will be a “Green City” Forum, based on presentations from the initiators of this European project which will highlight findings from research, as well as practical models from throughout Europe. On the last day, mobile workshops will take place during cross-border site visits to give examples of the arguments put forward during the first two days of the conference.

Guest speakers include: Jean-François Seguin, President of the European Landscape Convention; Antoine Berger, President of ELCA (European Landscape Contractors Association) and Franz Fischler, Former European Commissioner for Agriculture. Simultaneous translation will be available.
