Plants and Well Being in the spotlight at Media Guild Awards

The Colour your Life ‘Plants and Well Being Award’ was presented to Adam Pasco, representing the Gardeners World magazine team at the prestigious Garden Media Guild Awards, held in Central London on December 1st. Pasco and the Gardeners World magazine team impressed the judges with their ‘Grow yourself healthy campaign’. This utilised the magazine itself plus online and other communication opportunities to encourage readers to grow their own and maximise the health gains of home produced food. The success of the campaign in reaching and motivating a wide audience to grow and eat more in their gardens was particularly noted by the judges. Visit Colour your Life and Garden Media Guild for more information.

Other entries to be shortlisted were:

Grow your own drugs by Lucy Hooper, producer for Silver River Productions for BBC2. This is a popular TV programme presented by the charismatic James Wong that gives viewers ideas and techniques for creating a range of pharmaceutical products directly from plants.

The Places of Change Show Garden by the Eden Project at the Chelsea Flower Show; David Rowe with the Eden Project media relations team. This garden was designed and built by people with a history of homelessness or substance addiction and offered practical evidence that gardens and plants have the power to change lives for the better.

Thriving at Chelsea, by Naomi Slade in Berkshire Life. This was a popular magazine feature highlighting the benefits of horticultural therapy and in particular the work of the charity Thrive. Slade commented afterwards ‘I was delighted to be shortlisted for the Plants and Well Being Award. It is hugely rewarding to have the quality of one’s work recognised at an event of such calibre.’

Why people need plants, a book that is one of a series of short courses from the Open University edited by Carlton Wood and Nicolette Habgood, published by Kew Publishing.

Background to Colour your Life

Colour your Life is an EU supported generic promotional campaign that highlights the benefits of garden plants right through the year. It is run in conjunction with Plant Publicity Holland. It provides writers’ resources and images free for use by media professionals and POS materials for use by garden retailers. This co-ordinated approach ensures that target plants receive maximum coverage all year round and the widest possible audience benefits from information on the ‘real’ value of plants.
